Musical Ministry

"He who sings, prays twice".

Faith through Music

Your Talents

Music is a powerful tool that can elevate the soul, teach harmony and unity, and promote peace and joy. Sacred music is especially important in the liturgy as a way to help the faithful participate more fully, while music, in general, can express deep emotions, connect people, and provide a moment of transcendence from the ordinary.

Our music ministry involves using music to enhance worship, evangelize, and foster community within our St. Brigid's community. This includes a wide range of activities like singing in the choir, playing instruments, leading congregational singing, and creating sacred music to make the Mass more prayerful and participatory. The goal is not performance, but to lift the soul to God and help the community express and grow in faith together.

Why  music is so important at the Mass

  • To glorify God and edify the faithful: The primary purpose is to give glory to God and help the congregation grow in their faith.
  • To encourage active participation: Sung prayers and hymns encourage the congregation to participate fully and consciously in the Mass.
  • To foster a deeper prayer life: Music, especially when combined with the text, helps to move worship from an external act to an internal, prayerful experience. The saying, "He who sings, prays twice," attributed to St. Augustine, highlights this.
  • To create a transcendent atmosphere: Music can create an elevated, transcendent atmosphere, moving people away from mundane concerns and towards the sacred.
  • To communicate emotion and meaning: Music can convey a wide range of emotions and spiritual messages that are difficult to express with words alone.
  • To connect with tradition and heritage: Sung prayers and hymns connect modern congregants with the Church's long spiritual history and rich heritage, such as Gregorian chant.
  • To provide structure and solemnity: Sung responses, like the Kyrie or Sanctus, are part of the Mass's ritual structure and emphasize its solemn and sacred character.
