Cemetery History

The oldest graves in St. Brigid's Cemetery in Hadley, MA, are those of Rev. John Russell and his wife Rebekah, marked by table stones erected in 1693. There are also early sandstone markers for Aaron Cooke (1641-1716), Chileab Smith (1636-1731), and John Ingram (1642-1722), according to a document from the Hadley Cemetery Committee. The first burial in the cemetery, aside from perhaps an unnamed infant of Philip Smith, was John Webster, who died on April 5, 1661.
